Vacu Vin Wine Saver Vacuum Stoppers are specially designed to be used alongside a genuine Vacu Vin Wine Saver Pump. These stoppers allow for an airtight vacuum that preserves the flavor and taste of wine for up to a week! The stoppers are universal for all bottles and are simply inserted into the neck of an opened wine bottle. Although they are most effective when used with a genuine Vacu Vin Wine Saver Pump, they can also be used as a traditional stopper, keeping additional air out!
Vacu Vin Wine Saver Vacuum Stoppers are constructed from high-quality, food grade rubber that is dishwasher safe. They are extremely durable and will provide years of use. The cap on the top of the stoppers can be removed in order to aid cleaning.

Wine should breathe a little, but not overnight. Putting an end to the oxidation process, which turns a favorite Merlot into vinegar, is easy with the Vacu Vin Wine Saver. These long-lasting extra stoppers are designed to work with the vacuum-style pump (sold separately) to keep a wine fresh. Made of high-quality rubber, they won't affect the taste of the wine. And the method is simple--just place a stopper in the opening of a bottle, place the pump over the stopper, and pump air out until you feel some resistance. This process is suitable for preserving all but sparkling wines, and will save Chiantis, Syrahs, and others for up to two weeks. --Madeleine Miller

Better than before!
I've attached a photo to show the old pump, old stopper (on right) & new stopper (on left). The old pump works with the new replacement stoppers. The new stoppers work better than the old stoppers. Excellent suction. After reading other reviews I was leery. I wet the stopper before use as another reviewer recommended. After 3 days I pulled out a stopper - tons of suction! Very pleased!

I received the stoppers and noted a couple of things. First, I had a couple of these already, which look like the product pictured - grey with 4 vent holes. These new ones don't look as pictured - are black instead of grey, and only have 3 vent holes vs. 4, which increases the time it takes to pump air from a wine bottle. Finally, the center vacuum relief nub has some rubber stems from the molding process still attached - the ones I already had lacked these and were well-finished.
In summary, they're usable, but they don't quite feel right, as though they're a knockoff vs. a genuine Vacu Vin product. Then too, it could also simply be that Vacu Vin has changed the design and is going cheaper in it's production standards.
Update - a few weeks later, two have stopped holding a vacuum. Very frustratins. I ran over to Bed Bath & Beyond and - low and behold - they have the real Vacu Vin stoppers that look like the ones pictured in this seller's ad. With that, I have to say this seller is misrepresenting what they're selling, and these are not the genuine article. I'd advise anyone to stay away from this one.

THERE IS ONLY ONE RIGHT WAY TO USE THESE STOPPERS!
By Adam Churvis
I suspect the main reason others are complaining is that they are not using them correctly. I bought these to replace the lost stoppers from a Vacu-Vin that's well more than ten years old, so I'm used to the old style stoppers which worked well enough. These new stoppers are a superior design that can hold a much strong vacuum, if you have the muscle to create one. They seal and release perfectly, and it's faster to get a solid vacuum. To do it what I like to call, "The Right Way," first run the stopper under running water and then shake off the excess water, leaving it good and wet. Now insert it into the bottle with a good bit of pressure so that the curved surface of the stopper makes a solid seal against the rim of the neck. Now apply downward pressure while you pump the Vacu-Vin about a dozen times with a full stroke. To release the vacuum, push the little divot in the center of the top to the side and you'll hear a strong rush of air coming into the bottle. If you try to use a dry stopper, or if you don't fully seat it against the rim of the neck, it will most likely (but not always) leak air.
