I just bought this product about 3-4 weeks ago based on feedback that I saw here. I debated and debated and boy, I am I happy I got it. My chihuahua would let out bloodcurling screams when having his nails clipped by ANYONE. I went to two different vets in the animal clinic, Petsmart, Petco, the dog Grooming parlor - each time - he just screamed and screamed - and I mean scream, not yelp - in fact the vet said she had never heard a dog cry like that. Lo and behold I had to think of alternative options. With little nails (thank God they are not black - this would be a lot harder), which are white or almost clear, it was going to be a little easier. So I bought this in hopes that it would work. I read what some people say about introducing it to him slowly - and it worked. It is actually not very noisy at all. I left it on the floor, with some treats nearby, I also played around it and he and my other dogs got very curious. Finally, I sat him down, and gave him treats to distract while I touched each nail over and over on each paw without actually filing them down, slowly I did it in longer steps. Leaving the grinder on each nail a little bit longer (of course, not more than a few seconds, because it could burn!). Finally, now, if I want to trim his nails, I sit him down next to me on his back and while he eats treats I do each one - takes me all of 5-10 minutes tops! No crying, no screaming, no pulling paws away!! Just gotta stop to re-treat! I STRONGLY recommend others who are having this problem to get it - just make sure you introduce it to your dog slooowwwly!

5Great for Dobermans nails.
By Ashley R
i got this for the sole purpose of sanding down my dogs nails. He's a doberman, so he has very big nails, and they've gotten quite long due to a "shy" vet tech that wouldn't touch them. She finally told me i should file his nails till we got the quick to move back. Well its not easy find a file big or strong enough for these nails. So i turned to this. After looking at the more expensive ones you see on tv, with the little shield on it, i thought i was gonna have to pay a fortune for one. But i saw this dremel and decided to try it. It stays powered up for the longest time, i've used it for 4 5-10 minute sessions, and am just now recharging. Also its very quiet. The only thing i can think to compare it to, noise wise, would be "personal toys" and this is quieter than most of those. My dog is very flinchy, and doesn't like a lot of things, but he didn't budge when i turned this on. Also the sanding peices it came with seem to be holding up very well. I would buy this again anytime. One thing i would say, is make sure you read how to use one of these on your dog, so you don't hurt them. i read an article by DoberDawn. It was a great help.

5Minimite is PERFECT for nails on mini dogs!
By Kari Jo
Great tool! I have three small dogs, two 6 pounders and one 14 pounder. All three quickly relaxed in my lap while I filed their nails away while sitting on the sofa watching TV, which took maybe 10 minutes each dog. Much better experience than the squirming and fussing that goes on when I used the nail clippers!!!

Added benefit, one of my dogs has nails that curl under as they grow, looking like a backwards "C" (not normal striaght pointy dog nails). No matter how I clipped they always looked ugly and uncomfortable. The dremel allowed me to shape the nails (I started from underneath) so now they look normal and beautiful and I can see he is SO much more comfortable!

Also, we have a new sofa so shaping with the dremel means no sharp edges to scratch it (or me!).

I LOVE this tool. I ordered the 1/4" dremel mandrel and 120 (fine) grit bands for my dogs because of their size. I dremeled on low power. I let the battery recharge maybe 10 minutes in between dogs, just so it would be full strength (but I honestly didn't really notice a drain on power until maybe 30 minutes of steady use?).

Doberdawn website has a great page thoroughly detailing how to dremel a dog's nails - I highly suggest you read it before you begin as it helps if you know what you're doing and she gives some great tips.
